Three reasons to visit the orthodontist over the summer

School’s out for summer, which means it’s the perfect time to take the kids to the orthodontist if you think they might need braces or Invisalign. Here are three reasons why the team at Carter & Higgins Orthodontics suggests coming in over the summer months:

No Scheduling Conflicts

The school year always has a habit of keeping children and parents busier than usual. Whether it’s sports or play practice, time spent on homework, or club activities, there is always a place to be. Summer is the best time to take your child to the orthodontist because schedules are usually more flexible during these three months.

When it comes time for your child to get braces, the first couple of appointments are more frequent than the checkups. At your first appointment: we will have an exam, view records, and the doctor will develop a treatment plan specifically for that unique patient. At the next appointment, we will put the braces on, or the Invisalign treatment will begin, and we will demonstrate information about caring for braces to you and your child.

Starting the braces process in the summer gives you a chance to get the ball rolling without your child having to miss any school or practices, making the transition easier on both of you.

Time to Adjust

The first few days after getting braces put on, the teeth are more sensitive than usual. Due to this sensitivity, it’s best to stick to soft foods, such as mashed potatoes, soup, yogurt, and milkshakes.

It is also possible to develop sores in the mouth during the first week of having braces because of the roughness of braces. After the first week is over, your child’s mouth will be used to the braces, and there will be little to no pain.

Your child will need time to get into a hygienic routine after getting braces put on. After every meal, it’s best to brush to avoid getting any food stuck in the braces. During the summer, you and your child will have more time to learn the best way to care for their braces.

Getting a Head Start

Scheduling will be more accessible by starting the process in the summer, but it will also allow you to get ahead of the game. There might be some conflicts for appointments during the school year, causing you to keep pushing appointments too far back. By scheduling appointments for your child in the summer, there will be freedom to attend all necessary appointments in a timely manner. This will make the transition of getting braces to go as smooth as possible.
