-Woolaroc

TRAVEL TIME: 52 minutes

Hidden away in the rugged Osage Hills of Northeastern Oklahoma, Woolaroc was established in 1925 as the ranch retreat of oilman Frank Phillips. The ranch is a 3,700-acre wildlife preserve, home to many native and exotic wildlife species, such as buffalo, elk, and longhorn cattle. Woolaroc is also a museum with an outstanding collection of western art and artifacts, Native American material, one of the finest collections of Colt firearms in the world, and so much more.

-Illinois River near Tahlequah

TRAVEL TIME: 1 hour and 17 minutes

Winding through the Cookson Hills of northeastern Oklahoma is a sparkling, 60-miles-plus scenic waterway. The Illinois River cuts through steep and rocky bluffs, creating a breathtaking landscape for visitors. Shortleaf pine, red and white oak, hickory, sycamore, dogwood, and redbud trees surround the river, providing shade and wildlife habitats for deer, foxes, and many bird species, including bald eagles.

There are many outdoor fall activities, especially along the portion of the river that flows parallel to SH-10 northeast of Tahlequah. A float trip is the most popular way to experience the Illinois River any time of year. The busiest time of year is between Memorial Day and Labor day, so visiting in the Fall means you will be able to avoid the crowds, have the pick of the best campsites, and enjoy nature to its fullest.

-Wichita Mountains

Hikers and photographers will be astounded by the amount of incredible scenery offered within the refuge.

The on-site Quanah Parker Nature and Visitor Center features exhibits on wildlife and habitats of the Wichita Mountains and interactive and changing displays, artwork, videos, films, and a bookstore.
